Discovering Delicious Board Games: A Tasting Menu for Solo Players
Welcome to the Analysis Paralysis Cafe
Everyone always asks me, "What is your favorite board game?" My answer is never a game they've heard of. That’s not their fault! Most people know classics like Monopoly, Scrabble, and Life. Some might have played heavier games like Catan or Ticket to Ride. These big box store games are widely available. However, most hobby gamers shop at what we call the "FLGS" or Friendly Local Game Store. We follow content creators, bloggers, and publishers to stay updated on what's hot in the gaming world. Unfortunately, these two situations rarely overlap.
So, I've curated three "menus" for the Analysis Paralysis Cafe. Your chef? The Forever Solo Gamer! The cuisine options include:
New to Board Games? Try the Board Game Tasting Menu. This curated list is perfect for anyone who wants to explore.
Are you a solo gamer? Try the Solo Gamer Tasting Menu. It features options designed for anyone who enjoys their own company.
Enjoy a good family game night? Try the Family Friendly Menu. This selection is great for any family setting, from young to old, and from fun to brain-burning.
Appetizers to Start Your Journey
Each menu kicks off with hors d'oeuvres. These are usually lighter fare to whet your appetite. They typically take under 30 minutes to play, have very light rules, and pack just enough punch to be fun. For example, in the Family Friendly menu, one hors d'oeuvre is Hot Streak. It’s a racing and betting game where players watch mascots run, stumble, and fall across a football field until a winner emerges. This game lasts about 20 minutes and has very light rules. It’s fun, bright, and suitable for ages 6 and up.

After hors d'oeuvres, we move on to Soups and Salads. Soups are warm and familiar. They are comforting, approachable, and just enough to fill you up for a while. On the Tasting Menu, a salad option is Splendor. This entry-level engine-building game revolves around trading gems and jewels in Renaissance Europe. As you build up your engine, the higher-priced jewelry you can produce will attract wealthier nobility. This game plays 2-4 players and lasts about 30-40 minutes. It’s relatively simple and becomes a warm, friendly game you can keep coming back to, but light enough to enjoy before the heartier courses.

Salads are mid-weight games that offer some crunchy decisions and layered flavors, but not enough to overwhelm. When you eat a salad, you enjoy some crunch and a mix of flavors and textures. Variety is nice! An example from the Solo Menu is River Valley Glassworks. It can play 1-5 players but shines as a solo puzzle that's cozy and tactile with interesting strategy. It takes about 30-45 minutes to play and has a straightforward rules set. I love the plastic and acrylic pieces that represent the glass. They are bright, colorful, and just plain fun, yet thinky enough to keep you engaged.

Main Courses to Savor
Once you're past the appetizers, soups, and salads, it's time for the main course! Main dishes represent the heart of the evening. These games typically last an hour or more, may have more complex rules, and require more concentration. Each menu has a carefully selected list of options that cater to various tastes.
On the Family menu, you'd find a game like Everdell or Azul, which may also cross over into other menus. Everdell, for instance, can take 60-80 minutes and plays 1-4 players. The artwork is simply breathtaking—if you can say that about board game art! The pieces are tactile, and the strategy is nuanced, making it accessible for both younger and older, novice or experienced gamers. This is a game you could center a board game night around, even if you're playing solo.

Sweet Endings with Desserts
Finally, to polish off the night, we have a divine selection of desserts that are sweet and cleanse the palate. When you want dessert, you want it to be fun! On the Family Menu, we have some real crowd-pleasers that can be shared by many. For example, our family favorite is Just One. This cooperative game ensures no one’s feelings get hurt. You can play as long or as short as you like, or follow the guidelines of the rules, which could take up to an hour!
In this game, the person who is "it" picks a number between 1 and 5, determining which word on their card will be guessed. Everyone else takes their placard and writes a word that provides clues to the guesser, keeping it to themselves—no peeking! Then, the guesser closes their eyes while everyone else reveals their clues. Any duplicates are removed, and the remaining clues are what the guesser sees to determine their word. The goal is to have unique answers so that they don't get removed! This game is fantastic for ALL ages. We’ve played it with everyone from 5 to 75, and it’s always a crowd-pleaser.

Final Thoughts
